FLOWERBERRY GS
FLOWERBERRY GS was selected as an Open Call/targeted call in the Breeding Value Project. The objective of the open call is to “employ state-of-the-art methodology on breeders’ material and implement genomic selection to the breeders. This can help the breeders to do selection in early stages of their breeding program, accelerating the generation cycles by identifying superior parents, and increasing likelihood of identifying good candidates for advanced trialing.” (Open call #2 | BreedingValue)
Flowerberry GS is a project tightly linked to the strawberry breeding program at Njøs Fruit and Berry Centre (NJØS). The breeding program is currently being transferred from Graminor to NJØS. An Industrial PhD candidate hired at NJØS, has as of 2021 taken over the breeding responsibility for new crossings from 2021 and forward. FLOWERBERRY GS will be a flying start for this new strawberry breeder under education, both for building and sharing of competence from experts and to gain knowledge and implement molecular breeding tools in the program. The primary objective of FLOWERBERRY GS is for the new breeder to obtain training and implement a prediction model for powdery mildew to develop a more effective breeding of Nordic cultivars resistant to powdery mildew.
